Inside the Internship: A Q&A with Badgley Phelps Interns
At Badgley Phelps, we believe in investing in the next generation of financial professionals by providing hands-on learning experiences that go beyond the classroom. We have recently welcomed three talented interns— Maxim Arzumanov, Oscar Coromina Pujol, and Jacob Kirsch—who bring innovative perspectives, strong work ethics, and a passion for growth to our team.
Through this Q&A, we explore their backgrounds, experiences as student-athletes and coaches, and what they’ve learned during their time at Badgley Phelps.

Q&A with Our Interns
Sports and Leadership
Tell us about your current college sports career. What position or role do you play, and what are some highlights or memorable moments so far?
Max: I’m the Captain of the UW Ice Hockey Team, playing as a left-wing forward. Winning the PAC division in my sophomore year was a major highlight, but the most memorable moment was traveling to my hometown of Chicago for a Big Ten showcase. Competing against athletes I grew up playing with made it an unforgettable experience.
Oscar: I specialize in vault for the UW Gymnastics Team. A highlight for me was earning a spot in the floor lineup at the 2024 National Championships. Another favorite memory was competing in the 2021 Spanish National Championships, where I won bronze on vault alongside national team members who were my childhood idols.
Jacob:I’m a practice player for the UW Women’s Basketball Team, but my real passion is coaching. I’m the head coach of the Roosevelt High School Freshman Basketball Team and assist with JV and Varsity. One of my favorite moments was receiving a framed, signed team photo from my players at the end of last season—it’s now hanging on my wall as a reminder of the impact coaching can have.
Outside of college, what activities or clubs do you enjoy or participate in regularly?
Max:I like staying active by working out and running. I also volunteer with the Kraken Youth Hockey Association and plan to join the program’s coaching staff after graduation.
Oscar:With gymnastics, school, and work, my schedule is pretty demanding, but I enjoy hiking, biking, golfing, reading, and traveling whenever possible.
Lessons from Sports & Coaching
How does being an athlete influence your academic and professional pursuits?
Max: Athletics has helped me develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience—skills that apply directly to my professional goals. Hockey has also taught me how to handle setbacks and keep a strong work ethic in everything I do.
Oscar: Gymnastics has taught me discipline and time management. Balancing 19 hours of training each week with academics and work forced me to become more efficient and adaptable.
Jacob: Being an athlete has shaped my attention to detail and my drive to improve every day. Coaching, in particular, has strengthened my public speaking and ability to prepare and execute plans effectively.
What lessons from sports or coaching are helping you grow personally or professionally right now?
Max: As a captain, I emphasize to my team that failure is temporary and improvement is key. Whether it’s a tough loss or a professional setback, the focus should always be on learning and getting better.
Oscar: Being coachable is a skill I’ve had to develop. I’ve learned to take feedback, reflect on it, and apply it—even if it doesn’t resonate with me immediately. That ability to adjust and grow is invaluable in any field.
Badgley Phelps Experience
What has stood out to you during your time at Badgley Phelps?
Max:The team culture. From day one, I felt welcomed, and everyone has been open to collaboration, mentorship, and sharing advice.
Oscar: The hands-on work. Much like gymnastics, where I learn by doing, my time at Badgley Phelps has given me real-world experience that challenges and develops my skills.
Jacob:The strong sense of purpose in the office. Everyone is focused on delivering the best outcomes for clients, and I’ve appreciated learning in that environment.
What’s a project, task, or experience at Badgley Phelps that you’ve especially enjoyed?
Max: Sitting in on research meetings and seeing how investment decisions are made with a client-first approach. It reinforced the importance of aligning financial strategies with client needs and goals.
Oscar: Working with the value team to analyze how market shifts impact indices. It was fascinating to see how broad economic trends influence investment decisions and portfolio construction.
Looking Ahead
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Max: I see myself working at a wealth or asset management firm while continuing to give back to the hockey community through coaching.
Oscar: I hope to have completed CFA Levels 2 and 3 and earned my CFA charter. I see myself in investment research, working directly with clients.
At Badgley Phelps, we believe in fostering a culture of mentorship, learning, and professional growth. Oscar, Maxim, and Jacob have brought energy, curiosity, and dedication to our team, and we’re proud to support them on their journey.
We look forward to seeing where their careers take them and appreciate the impact they’ve already made during their time with us.
